freedom to read

I love my freedom to read whatever I want!

Freedom to Read Week is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms:

"Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms . . . thought, belief, opinion, and expression."

The list of challenged and banned books may surprise you!

  • The Lorax
  • The Giver
  • Three Wishes
  • Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
  • Harry Potter Series
  • The Golden Compass
  • Charlotte's Web
  • Thomas' Snowsuit, I Have to Go, A Promise is a Promise
  • and many, many more!

This inspiring Freedom to Read Week video was made by Julia and Danika from the Calgary Science School, who won the Calgary Public Library Teen Freedom to Read Week Video contest.
